‘Get Out’ Uses History Of Slave Trades To Intensify Plot.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Imagine going to visit your spouse’s family only to found out that you are potential property to be sold to others. Similar to the slave trades in the 1800s, the film recreates these acts to intensify the plot as Chris Washington, Daniel Kaluuya, visits his girlfriend’s family for the weekend.
In the film, Chris happens to visit on the same weekend his girlfriend Rose, Allison Williams, parents are having visitors over. However, they’re not just any visitors as the people who arrived, all of which were white, started to analyze Washington by testing his intelligence, his body and admired how cool he was. Like the trade, slave owners would analyze the slaves by checking their body and were most likely to be purchased if they were younger. This was poked at when he was noted as being 26-years-old. Slaves were then sold to the highest bidder. Rose’s father Dean, Bradley Whitford, was leading the bid with a picture of Chris on display with the guest placing their bid using bingo cards.

We are introduced to other enslaved African Americans including the housekeeper Georgina, Betty Gabriel, and the landscaper Walter, Marcus Henderson. They seem like normal obedient workers until Chris begins to have conversations with them in which Georgina begins to tear during their encounter, and Walter running away as fast as he can. They were under hypnosis thanks to Rose’s Mother Missy, Catherine Keener, who tries to trap Washington under the same spell in an effort to get him to quit smoking.

While talking to his bidder Chris asked why did the family targeted black people? Only to receive the answer that they wanted someone strong and share a common interest. What makes the film evedownload-7n more interesting is that with this kind of plot it was released during Black History Month. In a way, it brought this part of history to modern audiences to show how black people lost their own individuality during these trades and separated from their family and friends to serve their owners.

The film itself is a suspenseful thriller that is well written and features some funny moments to make light of intense scenes. Beginning to end all the elements of the film, including the brief history lesson, makes this movie a good time.

Recently, documented gang member  Lazarec Collins and 2-year-old Lavontay White Jr. were fatally shot during a Facebook Live post also leaving a pregnant female in critical condition. The woman was recording the video at the time. The beginning of the video shows all three riding around the neighborhood listening to rap music while the male is wearing a hoodie and a hat displaying hand gestures minutes before the shooting.

In the Dominican Republic, radio show host Luis Manuel Medina and one other were killed while doing a facebook live post when the gunman came into the studio and opened fire.

The first notable shootings include Brian Fields who was shot standing on the street corner by a food mart and the fatal shooting of Antonio Perkins later that year.

The shooting of Collins, Perkins, and Fields have been reported to be the effects of a growing trend known as “Cyber Banging“, the act of antagonizing rival gang members online. This includes posting videos of recent events, members flashing hand signs, and displaying weapons.  Members in the torture video were noted as repeating the word “gang” as they continued the assault.

Crimes that are streamed on Facebook, excluding Medina, are coming from the city of Chicago where the city has seen a spike in murder in January with nearly 299 shootings compared to 2016  with 292.

After it’s launch in August 2015, Facebook live has followed the likes of other social media streaming sites such as Periscope and YouTube but has now gained a reputation for capturing crimes in real time.

Deportation Next on President Trump’s Check List.

Presidents Trump seems to have started a new war of his own against illegal immigrants following a course of raids around the country. According to BBC, children of immigrants have been kept at home because of the recent actions. in addition to schools, jobs and businesses were involved in the sweep.

Most recently the sweeps occurred in Los Angeles with more than 160 arrested, mostly male, who either had a history of deportation, criminal background, or orders of removal. These areas include Oxnard, Downey, and San Bernardino which was the location of the 2015 terrorist shooting that left 16 dead. Other cities involved in the raid include Chicago, Atlanta, and New York

In a tweet by President Trump, he mentions that he is doing it as a campaign promise to rid these cities of criminals. The raid is the second publicized act that Trump has put into action following the unlawful travel ban.

Protesters are taking to the streets to help eliminate the raids. Residents of the immigration community want to speak out about the raids but didn’t want to reveal their identity because of the fear of deportation. They argue that the president is breaking up homes and separating families.

In a 2016 report by the Washington Post, there was a total of 10.9 million immigrants living the in the United States, falling below the 11 million total from 2015.

Ten Unsung Heroes In Black History.

Every February students in schools hear the same names of African American influences and a brief excerpt of their achievements. Barack Obama, first black president; Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights activist; Malcolm X, activist; and Harriett Tubman, the underground railroad. Although these people have a significant role in black history, there are other unsung everyday heroes that rarely receive recognition for their contribution to history.

Below is a list of ten inventors who invented simple and groundbreaking things, most of which are in our households. This shows that black history doesn’t happen only once a year, but what we use today is a reminder that the history is presented year round.

There are more unsung heroes who deserve their place in the textbooks but in order for this to happen black history needs to be brought back in schools and not just talks of slavery. In order to move forward, one must stop and look back at those who paved the way.

Have any more inventors who haven’t received proper recognition, please list them in the comments below.

The Box Office Film ‘Split’ Connects Multiple Personality Disorder to Pedophilia

(Warning: Spoilers ahead)

There are multiple films that use the condition of dissociative identity disorder to tell the story like ‘Shutter Island’ or ‘Me, Myself, and Irene’. M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film ‘Split’ follows Kevin, played by James McAvoy, as he deals with the other 22 personalities as he abducts three teens who would be used as a sacrifice for another personality looming in his mind.

The film started with promise but became weird fast as we begin to learn about each of the personalities with one of them, Dennis, having a thing for watching under aged girls dance naked for him. With this character, his obsession with cleanliness leads to the undressing of the teens into their underwear.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more uncomfortable, the scenes following five-year-old Casey, played by Izzie Coffey, takes it to another level. the flashback scenes follow her, her father, and her uncle as they teach her how to hunt, which helps her deal with Kevin’s disorder. In the middle of the film, while the father sleeps in the tent, the uncle, played by Brad William Henke, is half naked in the middle of the forest telling the five-year-old “This is our game” and tells her to take off her clothes like animals. With the death of her father, the uncle then takes guardianship of Casey as it explains why she is standoffish to her peers.

When Hedwig takes the spotlight and asked to kiss Casey, Ana Taylor-Joy, it continues to get weird even though it is a film and they’re both of age. But what does this film say about the connection between D.I.D. and pedophilia?

Studies show that people who experience abuse as a child, as Dennis tells us Kevin has suffered when he was younger, develops these tendencies for children. Maybe the film can be used to explain the behaviors of molesters or people suffering from the disorder but with 23 personalities, the Dennis character could’ve been one kept in the shadows.

With the film stressing the idea multiple personalities, we’re introduced to the same four; Hedwig, a 9 year old; Barry, the fashionista; Patrica, the mother-like character, and Dennis, the neat freak. The abductees in the film only met three of the personalities with the exception of Casey who spoke to Kevin.

Nonetheless, ‘Split’ is a thriller with a build up that explains why each personality is preparing for what’s to come next. Overlooking the idea of pedophilia in the film, it is still one worth seeing.

What Have We Learned Since President Trump’s Inauguration?

President Donald Trump during his inaugural speech. Credit Google

It’s been a full three days since we’ve witnessed the inauguration of now-President Trump. Since then, there has been marches and riots within the short time. As he enjoys his last day off before going to work tomorrow, there is much that people have learned since he was sworn into office. Below are just a few of the things that the media has shown that can set the tone for the next 97 days.

Melania Loves To Channel Former First Ladies

The first lady’s role is just as important as the president. All eyes are following her since her rip-off of Michelle Obama’s speech and her version of Jackie Kennedy’s dress from 1961’s inauguration. This can be a sign of things to come from the First Lady Trump. Hopefully, she can channel their ideas to continue the legacy of the duties of the first wives.

Trump Is The New Baine

One of the headlines over the weekend is Trump’s speech that is partially identical to the villain Baine from the film “The Dark Knight Rises”. The line “And we give it back to you…the people” was said in the film before the city of Gotham broke out into chaos. It’s if it solidifies people’s thoughts of him being the villain they assumed he would be.

Declined Attendance Count

Compared to the 1.8 million who showed up to Obama’s first inauguration, the estimated count for this inauguration was 900,000. a handful of those who weren’t in attendance were the democratic party who boycotted the ceremony including State Rep. John Lewis whom Trump had a war of words with on Twitter.

Women Fight Against Trump

The Women’s March that took place the day after the ceremony took place all over the word including Chicago, Washington, and San Francisco just to name a few. They expressed their disapproval with signs boycotting his presidency, most in rebuttal to his 2005 bus interview where he talks about how being a celebrity gives him perks including grabbing a woman’s genitalia.

Taking the Weekend Off

As mentioned earlier. he took this weekend off before he actually did anything the job entails. When he mentioned doing so, the thought of “He can do that?” probably echoed in the minds of Americans. With only 100 days to show the nation what you can do, wasting two of them is not the best way to get the ball rolling.

What is there to learn from just three days with the new president? His disapproval rating falls to 54 percent even hours before he took the oath. The inauguration itself was a showcase of who Mr. and Mrs. Trump inspire to be, going back to the Baine and Jackie-O reference. With the boycotting of the democratic party, this means that there will be a more divided congress. The attendance, Women’s March, and the approval rating make it obvious the support that he hoped for will remain a fantasy until he proves himself otherwise.

How Can He Turn It All Around

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist for the president to get more people on his side. Eliminating talks of the wall will bring more people on his side. Instead of trying to eliminate illegal immigrants, he can simply make them legal and tax them on their earnings, seeing that’s what it boils down to anyway. Also, open the revolving door between America and Mexico.

For women, issuing a sincere public apology about what he said in 2005 and owning up to his tweets will make him more of an honest person; better late than never.

Although many Americans already made up their minds about their feelings towards the new president, everyone must step out of their box, including the president and members of congress, to come together with less hate and more open minded. Most importantly, we must not damage our own land like the rioters in Washington. If not, the next four years will be the same result as we’ve seen within three days.
